Everyday Heroes

April Gamez, a resilient single mother, has always carried a fierce determination to create a brighter future for herself and her young son. Her journey, marked by hard work and unwavering hope, took a life-changing turn when she discovered the Affordable Housing Services of Texas Inc. (AHSTI) program—a discovery that would redefine her path forward.

“I was so blessed to find AHSTI through family connections,” Gamez shared, her voice filled with gratitude. “I have about five family members and two close friends who have affordable homes through the program. My aunt, in fact, was one of the first AHSTI homeowners in McAllen, Texas. Watching her journey inspired me. For my son and myself, I knew this was the right path.”

When she first encountered the AHSTI program on January 22, 2024, Gamez had no idea how profoundly it would change her life. “I didn’t even know programs like this existed,” she admitted. “To discover something as impactful as AHSTI, especially since it’s been helping families for years, felt like a gift. And now, to see it growing and continuing to serve even more people, I knew it was meant for us.”

Her first steps with AHSTI were transformative. “I attended my first class, and within 30 minutes, I was at an open house,” Gamez said, her eyes lighting up at the memory. “From that moment, I was hooked.”

But the road wasn’t without its challenges. Some doubted her ability to succeed, warning her that the process would be too stressful and complicated. “People told me, ‘It’s going to be too hard,’ or, ‘You’ll never pull it off,’” she recalled. Yet, those voices only fueled her determination.

What made all the difference was the unwavering support she found in AHSTI. “I made so many friends through this program,” she said. “Everyone was so hands-on and kind. From the first time I met Janie, America, and Claudia, everything felt smooth. They always got back to me quickly, and I felt truly supported.”

Contrary to the warnings she’d received, the home-buying process turned out to be a joyful experience. “They didn’t take away the excitement of being a first-time homebuyer,” Gamez said with a smile.

Beyond the home itself, her son remained her greatest motivation. For Gamez, this journey wasn’t just about purchasing a house; it was about setting an example for her child. “I wanted to show my son that anything is possible,” she said with emotion. “This isn’t just a house—it’s a foundation. And I want him to see that, ‘Sí se puede.’”

Looking back, Gamez reflected on the profound impact of the program. “I wasn’t just looking for a home; I was searching for hope, for motivation,” she said. “And then I found AHSTI. I fell in love with everything they stand for. In less than a year, they helped my son and me find a place to truly call home. I don’t regret a single moment.”

Gamez’s journey is a powerful reminder of how courage, community, and the right resources can transform lives. Through AHSTI, she found not just a house, but the strength to dream bigger and the foundation to build a brighter future for her family.
